Flood wreaks havoc in Adamawa, Sokoto

The Asare water project in Sokoto State is presently submerged in flood, forcing suspension of its operations with an imminent water scarcity.

The flood submerged 38 boreholes of the project and access roads leading to the N2.6b project commission­ed two years ago.

The General Manager, Sokoto State Water Board, Alhaji Moyi Tambuwal, said the flood followed the release of water from the Bakolori Dam in Zamfara State and the Goronyo Dam in Sokoto. He said operations at the project had been suspended.

Tambuwal said with the prevailing situation, residents of Sokoto city and environs would experience scarcity of water but that operations would resume when the water recedes. Similarly, farm produce worth over N100 million were destroyed by flood in 27 villages in Wurno LGA of Sokoto State, the chairman of the area, Alhaji Shehu Chacho, has said.

Chacho, who disclosed this to newsmen in Wurno yesterday, said the destroyed farm produce which were already maturing include rice, millet, guinea corn, maize and beans.

According to him, the flood was caused by the release of excess water from the Goronyo Dam which affected no fewer than 7,577 farmers.

He said the villages affected by the disaster include Dinbiso, Gidan-Kamba, Gidan-bango, ‘Yar-wurno, Tunga, Zayawa, Lahodu and Lugu.

Others are: Barayar-zaki, Kwargaba, Gidan-magori, Tuttudawa, Nasarawa, GidanModi and Dabagin-manomi, among others.

Chacho said no fewer than 2,500 hectares of farmlands under the Lugu canals had been submerged by the flood, which also destroyed similar farm produce there.

Elsewhere, seven communitie­s were yesterday flooded in Demsa and Numan LGAs of Adamawa State following heavy flow of water from the Kiri Dam in Guyuk LGA of the state. The dam, from the Gongola River, is about 30 kilometres length and 15 kilometres wide. Alhaji Haruna Furo, the Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), made this known in an interview with newsmen in Yola.

Furo said the most affected areas were Bilachi, Bali, Mbongado, Dwam Sabo and Kabawa in Demsa area while Imburu, Hayin Gada and Gbalang were affected in Numan LGA.
