- By Mustapha Suleiman

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe state governors deliberately refusing the financial autonomy of the judiciary.

JUSUN, arising from its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the weekend in Labour House, Abuja, said disobeying the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as court order is an impeachable offence and should be vigorously investigated.

According to a communique signed by the President, Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu and general secretary, Isaiah Adetola, the union said corruption can be reduced if financial and total independence of Judiciary is granted.

To this end, the union said a committee was put in place to discuss what to do with state governors who are fighting financial autonomy of judiciary.

The union however described as criminal for any state governor to disregard the constitution which he swore to uphold as well as the judgment of Federal High Court, Abuja on the matter after they failed to appeal the judgment within a stipulated time.

The union stated: “NEC in session frowns bitterly at deliberate refusal of the other governors to obey the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended on the issue of the financial autonomy of the judiciary as declared by the Federal High Court Abuja on the 13th of January, 2014.

“NEC in session while commending President Muhammadu Buhari on his ongoing anti corruption war, also urged him to continue and sustain the fight until victory is ensured”.

While commending the governors of Kastina, Jigawa, Oyo and Ondo states for respecting and complying with the provision of the constitution, the union urged other state governors to follow suit to avoid industrial crisis in their respective states.
