AIG warns police against harassing civilians

The Acting Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, Mr, Olufemi David, yesterday warned officers and men of the police against harassing members of the public, especially during Eid-el-Kabir festival.

He urged them to always treat civilians with utmost respect, adding that he would not hesitate to deal decisively with any officer or policeman found wanting.

Addressing personnel of the Sokoto State Police Command yesterday, the AIG said: “We need to get closer to members of the public to get useful informatio­n, we must not harass them because if we intimidate them, they we will not provide us informatio­n. I therefore urge you to rededicate yourselves to your duties in order to gain their confidence.”

He the police and the military were currently conducting an operation to end cattle rustling in the state.

According to him, cattle rustling has reduced drasticall­y in the North-west as a result of the joint operation, and the police would continue doing their best to end the menace.

Sokoto State Commission­er of Police, Salisu Abdullahi, said Sokoto had witnessed incidences of cattle rustling in communitie­s that have borders with Zamfara where cattle rustlers took herds of cattle and killed innocent citizens. He said through community partnershi­p with stakeholde­rs and concerted efforts of security agencies, the menace had been reduced.
