AIG warns police against harassing civilians
The Acting Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, Mr, Olufemi David, yesterday warned officers and men of the police against harassing members of the public, especially during Eid-el-Kabir festival.
He urged them to always treat civilians with utmost respect, adding that he would not hesitate to deal decisively with any officer or policeman found wanting.
Addressing personnel of the Sokoto State Police Command yesterday, the AIG said: “We need to get closer to members of the public to get useful information, we must not harass them because if we intimidate them, they we will not provide us information. I therefore urge you to rededicate yourselves to your duties in order to gain their confidence.”
He the police and the military were currently conducting an operation to end cattle rustling in the state.
According to him, cattle rustling has reduced drastically in the North-west as a result of the joint operation, and the police would continue doing their best to end the menace.
Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Salisu Abdullahi, said Sokoto had witnessed incidences of cattle rustling in communities that have borders with Zamfara where cattle rustlers took herds of cattle and killed innocent citizens. He said through community partnership with stakeholders and concerted efforts of security agencies, the menace had been reduced.
