...Distributes life jackets to students
The Lagos State government yesterday distributed 2,400 life jackets to five primary schools in Sabokoji, Amuwo-Odofin LGA in an attempt to ensure safety of school children in riverine areas of the state.
The Managing Director, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Mrs. Abisola Kamson, who made the donation on behalf of the government, said the jackets were specifically designed for students.
Kamson said the goal of the government was to ensure that every water transportation user uses a life jacket while embarking on transportation of any kind on water.
“Drowning is a major problem among children living in riverine areas. Our goal is to reduce the number, if not eradicate it completely. We are here as part of the government’s concentrated efforts to encourage and improve water safety in the state,” she said.
The Executive Secretary of Amuwo-Odofin LGA, Mrs. Modupeola Ajibola-Ojodu, appreciated the gesture and enjoined beneficiaries to make good use of the jackets.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr Oluseyi Whenu, said the initiative was part of the integrated intermodal transportation system of the government aimed at bringing together all the means of transportation in the state.
