Karmo, Idu communities bemoan lack of teachers

- By Abubakar Haruna

Residents of Karmo and Idu communities in the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Abuja, have expressed concern over lack of teachers in their primary schools.

The Chairman Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Karmo 1 and 11 primary schools, Prince Bello Sarki, told City News that lack of teachers is one of their major problems.

He said that they employed nine teachers but three of them have resigned their appointments.

He maintained that the aggrieved teachers demanded for salary increment which is beyond PTA’s financial capacity.

“We had nine teachers in our primary schools but three of them complained that the money we are paying them is not enough because they are coming from far places. They later resigned. Now we have six teachers. We are paying them N12, 000 per month. Government is not giving them anything,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chief of Idu community, Alhaji Muhammadu Bawa, expressed dismay over lack of teachers in their primary schools.

“We have primary schools in Karmo, Idu, Gyada and Pape areas but we don’t have enough teachers. We have been complaining to the appropriate authorities but all our efforts have proved abortive. We are still appealing to them to come to our aid and provide teachers so that our children will get qualitative education,” he said.

Abdullahi Ahmad, the PTA chairman for Idu-Koro 11 community, said that apart from lack of teachers, their primary schools lacked security and proper fencing.

The Deputy Director, Local Education Authority, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Garr Mary, said that they are making efforts to address all the issues bordering primary schools under their control.

“We have been writing to the board. We are not on our own, we are under AMAC. Our own is to forward it to them. We assure you that we will keep on writing and pressing for it,” she said.
