Thieves have used metal objects to break into the female hostel of Bingham University Karu, Nasarawa State.

The incidence occurred on Thursday at about 2.00am while most of the students were asleep.

The thieves, who were said to have met no resistance from the students, carted away monies and items ranging from i-pads, laptops to mobile phones. No student sustained injury in the attack.

The Head of Information and Public Relations of the university, Sebastine M. Abu, who confirmed the incidence in a statement, said the police swiftly responded when they were alerted, causing the criminals to escape in different directions.

He said no student or staff was injured in the attack, adding that “the university is calm and all academic activities including lectures, students’ registration for the new semester are going on normally.”

According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor Professor Kursim Leonard - Fwa, who was at the hostel after the incident, sympathized with the students, especially those whose belongings were stolen, and promised a more formidable security measure to prevent criminal elements from gaining access into the campus.

Professor Fwa encouraged the students to be security conscious and to report any suspicious movement or persons to the university authority for quick response.

“The university’s management in collaboration with the police has put in place stiffer security measures on the campus to protect the lives and property of members of the university community,” he said.
