Kano primary schools’ teachers celebrate Sallah without salaries

- From Yusha’u A. Ibrahim, Kano

Primary school teachers in Kano State have expressed disappointment with the government over non-payment of salaries. Some teachers, who spoke to newsmen at the Eid-prayer ground, lamented that they were neither paid salaries nor given ram allowance. Ram allowance was introduced in the state by the Shekarau-led administration.

One them said he could not buy ram and or prepare a good meal for the Sallah.

He said, “I was not paid salary and I have no other means of income apart from my salary. We did not get our salary which is our right not to talk of ram allowance. It is unfortunate that government could not pay us salaries even at this very important period.”

Another teacher, who also craved for anonymity, appealed to the government to look into their plight.

He also appealed to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, to assist them on the matter.

“Teachers in the state are facing serious difficulties due to non-payment of our salaries. Most of us rely on our monthly salaries so, whenever government fails to pay us, we will face hardship,” he said. About ten houses have been destroyed by erosion at Ndi Uduma Awoke community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Daily Trust gathered.

Conducting journalists round the erosion sites, President General of the community development union, Eme Uche, lamented that all efforts to draw the attention of governments to their plight have proved abortive.

“Already, the school has been cut off and children now find it difficult to go to school. Some areas in the community have been cut off also. We have reported this menace in writing to the ecological fund office at the Presidency in Abuja and to the Abia State government. If nothing is done urgently, the entire community will be swept away,” Uche said.

He added that erosion has not only affected education and agriculture, but also the social life of the people.

“Ohafia people are noted for their self help efforts but this erosion problem is beyond self help and that is why we are crying to the state and federal governments to come to our aid. We pay taxes to government and as such we should be treated well,” he said.

Also speaking, traditional ruler of the community, Eze Kalu Uduma Nchonwa, said since 1999, when the problem started, all they have received are empty promises. He called on the present administration to assist them.
