Focus on impunity, ombudsman tells leaders

- By Ojoma Akor

Secretary General of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association, Dr Otiende Amollo has advised leaders to focus on fighting impunity before corruption. He gave the advice when he led a delegation on a visit to the chief commissioner, Public Complaints Commission, Emmanuel Ogbile in Abuja.

He said: “The main problem is not corruption, it is impunity. Impunity is doing wrong things with the belief that you wouldn’t suffer consequences. The main fight we should focus on is the fight against impunity.”

Amollo who is also the Kenyan ombudsman said fighting corruption is not just the role of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent and Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) but there are always complementary roles the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) can play.

While saying that corruption is everywhere in Africa and not just Nigeria, he said the fight against impunity requires a multi-sectoral approach and it is with complimentary approach like that of the Public Complaints Commission “that you fight impunity and then against corruption.”

Mr Ogbile said Nigerians are not aware of what the Public Complaints Commission does or that it exists to address perceived administrative injustice saying that is why they have designed certain strategies to reposition the commission.
