Police arrest cafe owner for recruitment scam
Police operatives attached to Nyanya Division have arrested one Shedrach Ameh, owner of Scodek Infotech Cyber Café, Suite 5, First Plaza Nyanya, for defrauding desperate and unsuspecting job seekers by asking them to pay N2000 for fake online police recruitment registration.
A police source said the operatives received distress calls from members of the public who were victims of the suspect.
One of the victims, Beatrice Uzoma, told our reporter that she had paid more than N300, 000 to the suspect who promised to get her a job with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
According to her, when the job could not materialize after selling all her valuables to raise money to pay for the job, she confronted him but was surprised when he asked her for some more money as the contact from the CBN needed more money to make the job available to her.
“That was when I knew that I had been duped, then I asked him to refund all the money and recharge cards I sent to him, but he refused. I immediately reported the matter to my neighbour who works with the CBN. He informed me that they were not recruiting and that was when I went to the police,” she said.
City News gathered that when police operatives raided the cafe, the following advert was found pasted on the door: “APPLY FOR NIGERIA POLICE 2015/2016 RECRUITMENT HERE”.
The FCT police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent Anjuguri Manzah said that it was important for members of the public to note that the Nigeria Police Force is not recruiting; and when the recruitment will be done it will be publicized in the media.
He said that the suspect is helping the police in its investigation and that he would be charged and arraigned in court on completion of investigation.
