Scavenger jailed for stealing N150 at Kubwa

Police drag 2 security guards to court for stealing phone

A 24-year-old scavenger has been sentenced to five months imprisonme­nt by an Abuja Grade 1 Area court for stealing the sum of N150.00 in Pipeline area of Kubwa, Bwari Area Council of the FCT.

Auwal Salisu was convicted for theft, an offense contrary to section 288 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that the complainan­t, Alhaji Umar Suileman of Pipeline, Kubwa, on September 15, reported at the Kubwa police station, of how the accused, on same date, entered his room and stole away with the sum of N150.00 belonging to his son, without his consent.

He said the accused was however caught and arrested with the said amount while attempting to escape.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five months imprisonme­nt by the judge, Mohammed Marafa, with an option of N5, 000 fine.

Similarly, a 30-year-old man was arraigned before the same court for allegedly stealing the sum of N250, 000 from a shop in the same area.

Halimat Abu of Dei-dei was charged with theft, offense contrary to section 287 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that the complainan­t, Veronica Kpaasu of P.W, Kubwa on September 11, reported at the Kubwa police station, of how the accused, on same date, acted in a dubious manner and dishonestl­y stole her money in the tune of N250, 000 kept in her shop.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N300,000 by the judge, Mohammed Marafa with two reasonable sureties, one who must be a civil servant resident within the court jurisdicti­on.

The case was adjourned to November 4 for hearing. Police in Kubwa have dragged two security guards before an Abuja Grade 1 Area court for allegedly stealing a Nokia cellphone belonging to one Emmanuel Ogba.

Joshua Arube, 25, and Friday Ogbu, 22, all of Jaji street, were charged with joint act and theft, offences contrary to section 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that the complainan­t, of Byazhin, on September 19, reported at the Kubwa police station, of how the accused, on same date, jointly in furtheranc­e of a common intention, stole his Nokia cellphone valued at N27,000 without his consent.

When the charge was read to the accused, they pleaded not guilty and the judge, Mohammed Marafa granted them bail in the sum of N50, 000 each, with one reasonable surety who must be resident within the court jurisdicti­on. The case was adjourned to November 3 for hearing.

Similarly, A 27-year-old man has been arraigned before the same court for allegedly stealing electric cables belonging to Reapfields Resources Limited.

Thomas Apken of Ushafa Bwari was charged with theft, offences contrary to section 287 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that the complainan­t, Alebiosu Oluwatosin of Wuse 2, Abuja, on September 17, reported at the Kubwa police station, of how the accused, while he was on duty as security guard, the accused acted in a dubious manner.

He said the accused dishonestl­y stole electric cables property of Reapfields Resources Limited kept under his custody with value yet to be estimated, without his consent.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N100, 000, by the judge, Mohammed Marafa, with two reasonable sureties who must be resident within the court jurisdicti­on.

The case was adjourned to November 3 for hearing.
