I didn’t benefit anything from cultism – suspect

- From Hope Abah, Makurdi

Monday Joseph seems full of regret as he sat quietly among 19 others paraded by the Police in Benue State few days ago in connection with various crimes committed in different locations of the state.

State commissioner of police, Paul Dibal Yakadi said that the suspects were arrested through the concerted efforts of officers and men of the command in the past one month.

And that Joseph was apprehended for his involvement in cult activities which claimed the life of a policeman and a soldier as well as other dangerous treatment his gang meted to innocent people of the society.

According to the commissioner, the command under his watch has resolved in line with policy thrust of its new leadership at the headquarters in Abuja to raid all criminal hideouts in order to tame the activities of the criminal elements in the state.

Consequent upon which he added that the command has through visibility policing, community partnership, increased intelligence gathering, adoption of tactical operation observation points clamp down on hoodlums and cultists.

Unlike most suspects who would say the police arrested them for not doing anything, Joseph admitted his involvement in cult activities but denied being part of those that killed the policeman and a soldier.

“I’m here based on suspicion of cult related activity. Yes, I’m involved in cultism and I’m a member of the ‘Red Skin’. My bad friends led me to join the group and I don’t benefit anything from being a cultist,” he said.

The suspect who claims to be a student of the Benue State University, (BSU) in Makurdi told Daily Trust that he regretted his past action in allowing friends of questionable character to lure him into trouble when he ought to have concentrated on his studies.

Joseph, a resident of Wurukum suburb in the state capital of Makurdi also swore that if by chance he is let out of the hook, he would never again have anything to do with cult groups.

Meanwhile, the Police has said that investigation into the matter was still continuing and that the suspect alongside other arrested persons which included; suspected armed robbers, ritualist, cultists, kidnappers, cattle rustlers and car snatchers would be charged to court.
