Amiddle-aged woman, Mary Udoh, who recently escaped being killed by a suspected two-man armed robbery gang along Ladoke Akintola Street, Lagos, has recounted how she and her husband escaped by the whiskers.

The panic-stricken Mary told Daily Trust exclusively that she and her husband were trekking on the Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, to board a commercial tricycle when they were suddenly confronted by two suspected armed robbers.

She said one of them held her husband down while the other held a small axe close to her head.

She said,” I was trekking with my husband, John Udoh, on Ladoke Akintola Street, Ikeja, in order to board a commercial tricycle (Marwa) to Nitel. Suddenly, two boys emerged from nowhere and held my husband hostage.

“One of the boys also held me firmly and forcefully collected my handbag containing three handsets and the sum of N9, 000. Immediately, I shouted for help. While I was shouting for help, I saw a patrol van of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) 163 approaching us. Immediately they sighted the policemen they zoomed off in a Toyotal Camry car with the speed of lightening.”

Confirming the arrest, the police public relations officer, Lagos State command, Joe Offor, said the team also recovered a Toyota Camry car with registration number GGE 204 DG, used by the suspected robbers.

He said the RRS commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, revealed that the team, while on patrol, saw a lady who was crying for assistance after she and her husband had been robbed.

He explained that the victim revealed that they were on their way to board an East-bound vehicle at about 5:40 am.

The police responded immediately and embarked on a hot chase of the fleeing suspected robbers, who on sighting the approaching patrol team, abandoned the vehicle and fled into the bush.

“The recovered vehicle is presently at the premises of the RRS headquarters in Alausa. The items recovered inside the vehicle include six handsets, 1 UTC Axe, one pair of canvass, a passport photograph, a taxi sign board and documents,” he said.
