8 Yobe students die in car crash

Eight students of National Mathematic­al Centre, Abuja from Yobe State have died on Sunday in a ghastly motor accident at Zangon Buji village along Kano-Gaya road, Daily Trust gathered yesterday.

The 20-seater bus with registrati­on number 41A 05 YB that involved in an accident was said to be carrying 20 students.

The accident which occurred at about 5:30pm on Sunday after the driver of the bus belonging to Yobe State ministry of education was said to have lost control led to the death of three students and the driver at a spot.

It was also gathered that four others later died in Rasheed Shokoni Specialist Hospital, Dutse, Jigawa State with others still receiving treatment.

One of the locals who was asked to watch over the wreckage of the vehicle involved in the accident, Shuaibu Audu told Daily Trust at the scene of the accident that three of the students died.

According to him, he overheard from among the other drivers that the late driver lost control because he slept off.

“I heard them saying that the driver lost control because he was sleeping,” Audu said.

Spokespers­on of Jigawa State Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Route Commander, Zayyanu Ibrahim confirmed the incident saying, it was an accident involving a lone vehicle.

Jigawa State Police Command spokespers­on, DSP Abdu Jinjiri also confirmed the incident but said it was only six persons that died, three at a spot and three others at the hospital.

However, the Yobe State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam was among the early callers to condole the families of the deceased at Sabon Fegi, and behind Emirs palace, Damaturu.

He prayed for the soul of the deceased to rest in eternal peace and give the families fortitude to bear the lost.

Fathers of one of the deceased, Alhaji Mohammed Hassan thanked the governor for the visit, saying that the accident was an act of God.
