2 civil servants docked for earning multiple salaries

- From Dele Ogunyemi, Ibadan

Two civil servants in Oyo State, Oluwaseun Adegoke and Ojo David Olarenwaju, were yesterday arraigned before Magistrates’ courts in Ibadan for allegedly receiving multiple salaries from the state government.

The duo who were docked separately in Court Two and Three, pleaded not guilty to all the charges levelled against them.

Oyo State Government had recently announced the suspension of over 16,000 civil servants for incrimination in different illegal cases, including multiple salaries, age falsification, defective biometric verification numbers, among others. The government had decided to sue the suspects after further clarifications.

Oluwaseun Adegoke, who appeared before Chief Magistrate A F Richards of Court Two is facing eight-count charge while the other suspect, Ojo David Olarenwaju, facing sevencount charge, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate A Adebisi of Court Three.

Specifically, the suspects were accused of illegally receiving millions of naira as salaries between February 2014 and December 2015, using different names with different account numbers.

While Oluwaseun Adegoke was accused of using six different names to receive monthly allowances of corps members and another name of a dead civil servant to receive salary, Ojo David Olanrewaju was alleged to have used the name of a nonexisting officer to receive salary from the state civil service.

Defence counsel, Mr Akeem Agbaje, who stood in for the suspects, applied for bail which was not opposed by the prosecuting counsel, Mr Adetunji Gbadegesin.

The cases were adjourned till July 22nd and 25th this year.
