Mom unleashes anger on daughter’s alleged rapist …the woman is my lover, suspect says

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

The grieving mother of a nineyear-old girl, who was allegedly raped by a mechanic on Dayo Philip street, Ikorodu, Lagos, recently, said she wished the rapist had died when he was attacked by a mob.

“I wished you had died. I hope you rot in hell because you had canal knowledge of a child who knows nothing. You took away the little girl’s virginity, something you have no right to take away from her,” said the raging mother at the command headquarters where the suspect was paraded.

Morif Mohammed, 46, was arrested by the police at Owutu Police Station, Ikorodu, while he was being attacked by a mob that attempted to kill him when the news of his action filtered out.

But the suspect alleged that the mother of the girl had been his lover for about eight months and was only framing him for reasons he didn’t know.

“How can you sleep at night, how can you rest?” the grieving mother asked the suspect.

She described her daughter as an “outgoing, free-spirited” girl who was full of promise and aspired to be great in future.

“I am extremely proud of the person she was going to become, but now how is she going to face life. How would she see other men,” she asked while trying to fight back her tears.

Detectives said after the beating, an unconscious Mohammed was first treated at a hospital before he was transferred to the command headquarters for further investigation.

The suspect, who was originally charged with two counts of rape and assault, may face as much as 15 years if convicted.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspect before newsmen, said the victim was traumatized and was being treated at Mirabel Medical Centre, Ikeja.

He said the suspect had allegedly had canal knowledge of the victim who was a minor before he was arrested.

But the suspect insisted that he was framed by the mother of the girl whom he claimed was his lover.

“I had gone to drop money for the daily feeding when the woman asked me to wait a while. I sat in the sitting room while she went to the inner room. Suddenly she emerged from one of the rooms holding something in her hand. Before I knew what was happening she had sprayed grounded pepper into my eyes.

“She grabbed me as I attempted to run away. I managed to free myself and fled from the house. I went to Ikorodu police station to report the incident, but while there they said I should go to Owutu where the incident took place.

“On my way, I saw her brothers and some of their friends. They chased me and caught up with me. They gave me the beating of my life. It was the timely arrival of the police that saved my life.

“At the station, I was shocked when she accused me of raping her nineyear-old daughter,” he said.
