Abaji council chairman revokes corner-shops

- By Abubakar Sadiq Isah

The chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, has revoked cornershops space at the council’s main market that was allocated to some individuals by the past administration of Alhaji Yahaya Garba Gawu.

Ajiya, who revealed this at the palace of Ona of Abaji last Thursday, said the council’s decision to revoke the land was because due process was not followed by the past administration before allocating the spaces to some individuals.

He said the council had met two weeks ago with executives of the council’s branch of the market traders association before he arrived at the decision.

He further informed the chief that he came and met three broken-down tractors, but the council has started refurbishing them in order to give out for hiring services to rural farmers in the council, adding that plans are on to liaise with the FCT administration on the need to buy new tractors in the area.

“But even before we embarked on refurbishing those tractors, a file was brought to me that I should append my signature that those three tractors had already been auctioned by the past chairman, which I declined and insisted that we must invite engineers to come and look at them if they were worth repairing,” he said.

The chairman thanked the people of the council for the massive support they gave to him at the poll, saying the council will try its best to provide the needed amenities to the people as the finance of the council started improving.

Earlier, the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, called on residents of the council to put more efforts in farming activities in the area.

He further expressed hope that with the visit of the FCT permanent secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye, to the Abuja University of Technology site, academic activities will soon take off so that the youth and unemployed graduates will also have the opportunity to get employment.
