Assembly wants special consideration by Character Commission for Borno
The Borno State House of Assembly has lamented that the state has been left behind in the last 16 years in terms of employment opportunities and called on the Federal Character Commission to fill the gap.
The lawmakers, yesterday, unanimously agreed that the Boko Haram insurgency and other factors had drawn the state backwards in terms of employment opportunities and projects.
While commenting on a motion on urgent attention, which was moved by Alhaji Abdullahi Musa (APC, Askira), speaker of the assembly, Abdulkareem Lawan, said now that the federal government had rolled out plans to provide job opportunities for Nigerians, Borno deserves special preference because of the peculiar misfortunes it suffered in the last six years.
“The House has mandated a 5-man ad hoc committee to liaise with Federal Character Commission on how to bridge the gap, and also give special preference to hundreds of our youth vigilantes, who sacrificed their lives and worked closely with the military to restore peace,” the speaker said. While passing a resolution on the need for federal contractors to return to sites in the state, the Borno assembly urged the company handling the Maiduguri Airport remodeling to quickly complete the abandoned project for security purpose.
“We wish to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for giving special attention to Borno State in the last one year, by deploying thousands of troops and appointing our sons as National Security Adviser and Chief of Army Staff,” the speaker also said.
