A female member of a five-man robbery gang was recently shot dead by the Anambra Special Anti-Robbery (SARS) in a gun battle in Asaba, Delta State.

The woman is said to have been gunned down along Nnebis road in Asaba following a tip-off by the Delta State Police Command.

Briefing newsmen in Awkuzu, the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Ali Okechukwu, said the Delta State Police Command arrested and handed over one of the suspects to the Anambra Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

He said the suspect, who he described as the most wanted robbers popularly called Obosima, on interrogation, confessed to series of armed robbery and car snatching incidents they carried out within and outside the state.

"He opted to lead operatives to their hideout in Asaba, Delta State," he said.

Ali said the operatives were, however, attacked by the gang and in the shoot out one of them, identified as Chuma Anyichie and an unidentified female, were arrested with bullet injuries but the former died few minutes later at the scene.

According to the spokesperson, the same gang had earlier ran into a vigilante group providing security in Awka-Ekiti adding that the robbers gunned down one of the vigilantes as they shot sporadically.

He said the corpse of the young vigilante who died on the spot was still in the mortuary.
