Recession: Nigerians in Malaysia urge politicians to make sacrifices

- From Mutiu Ganiyu, Kuala Lumpur

Nigerians living in Malaysia have appealed to Nigerian politicians and top government officers at all levels to make more sacrifices by willingly reducing their salaries and allowances to reflect the reality of the economic recession in the country.

Speaking with Daily Trust in Malaysia, some Nigerians noted that leaders should live by example and demonstrate that they are in tune with the hardship being faced by most Nigerians.

They decried the hardship at home and abroad. However, most of them were of opinion that politicians, appointees and top civil servants’ salaries and allowances need urgent downward review.

Kuala Lumpur residents-Akanji Fatai, Abubakar Hamid, Isaac Kenneth, Umar Nasir and others were of the opinion that the Nigerian economy could not sustain the present emoluments paid to politicians and other government officers.

“It’s a reality that our politicians are among the highest paid in the world, if not the highest. This is not in tandem with our economic reality. Many Nigerians are suffering because of mismanagement by past administrations. Politicians’ salaries should be urgently reviewed downward”, Nasir said.

They also urged Nigerians to endure the present situation and support the present administration for the country’s future.
