NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer not suitable for Nigeria – FG
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has expressed concern over some governors disregarding the ministry’s new regulations on fertilizer, which proscribed the use of 15-15-15 NPK fertilizer.
Chief Ogbeh stated this recently while having a meeting with state commissioners of agriculture in Abuja.
“I am not very comfortable because I heard in some states; governors are still
distributing 15-15-15 NPK fertilizer in spite of the new formula we distributed in February. I don’t know why the information hasn’t gone down well enough. The 15-15-15 fertiliser does no good for any soil in this country. We may distribute afresh, a new formulation of fertilizer,” the minister stated.
The agric minister stressed that the ministry was working with the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) to strengthen fertiliser blending in the country to increase accessibility of farmers to quality fertiliser in the country.
“You have blenders in your states, some are not working, we have just met with NIRSAL of the CBN to support all those blending plants to come alive so that we blend the right kind of fertilizer for the right kind of crop with the right kind of soil,” he said.
Chief Ogbeh emphasized that appropriate fertiliser and quality seeds will enhance the farmers’ output, adding that “If farmers get better yield, then we can revive agriculture because the farmers will then know that agriculture pays.”
