Runsewe presents a fresh Pro golf deal

-

There seems to be a perennial recession in the Professional golf game in Nigeria. The whole thing is looking like ‘Abradacabra’… the more you look, the less you see.

Some two years back, the Pros had to see off so many months with about no tourney to play in. All of a sudden, what was meant to be a breadth of fresh air, the West Africa Tour came into play. Even though there was an unbelievable negative ‘Catcalls’ about the Tour, Pros still featured in it all the same. The mantra then was the Tour could be better than nothing. But after four episodes of the Tour, all has gone quiet. Again, a kind of agitation is back in the Pro circle. When will another tourney show has become the most asked question among the Pros.

But there is one golf icon who believes the nation’s golf professionals don’t necessarily have to lapse into harrowing moment anytime tourneys are not forthcoming. The fellow is Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the founder of the posh Garden Golf Water Front situated in the heart of Wuse, Abuja.

Otunba Runsewe, without mincing words, believes all the Pros need are genuine designs that could keep them busy all months of the year irrespective of whether they have tourneys to play in or not.

“I think a Golf Challenge can solve this riddle”, Otunba Runsewe proclaimed. “I mean people of like minds can come up and form and own teams among the Pros across the nation. A team can consist of three Pros and one amateur. Naturally the amateur will be the owner of the team. By the time about forty teams are formed around the country with two Pro-Ams monthly, we must have engaged the Professionals. Forming of teams will not be limited to the IBB Golf Club alone. Other Clubs elsewhere in the country can equally do same. This will even make the challenge a fierce one and the fun will be huge.

“No one is saying the Pros will play for fun alone. There will be monetary gains to winners and may be Appearance Fee to those Pros who can’t match up in each game.

“I believe each team can start up with say, N50,000. This will form seed fund from where prize winnings will be drawn from. After this, sponsorship will come in since each team will be endorsed and fully kitted. Above all this, what is important is that the Pros are kept busy and fully in shape till any tourney comes up”.
