Buhari investigates alleged sexual abuse at IDPs camps
President Muhammad Buhari has dispatched the Women Affairs Minister Aisha Alhassan to IDPs camps on fact-finding about alleged sexual abuse by officials.
Speaking to journalists at Fufore camp in Adamawa State, the Minister said some civil society organisations had written to the president over the alleged abuse, prompting the president to send her on the mission.
She said although her interaction with IDPs in Adamawa State revealed that some abuses had actually taken place in the past, such abuses were not in the manner contained in the petition.
“Some civil society organisations wrote that women and girls were being violated and taken advantage of at the IDPs camps. I was in Borno, Yobe and our findings so far have not confirmed the allegations,” she stated.
Alhassan however said she could not give details of the findings, assuring the public that government would always ensure the protection of the vulnerable.
The minister who previously visited Governor Muhammad Jibrilla and Lamido Adamawa, Dr Barkindo Mustapha, called on the two leaders to assist her ministry in sensitizing women about economic empowerment initiatives introduced by the federal government.
Receiving the minister who paid him a courtesy call, Governor Jibrilla commended the progress made in the war against insurgency in North East, pledging to support federal government in its effort to maintain peace and bring economic development to the people.
