Kubwa residents appeal to AEPB over overflowing

- By Richard P. Ngbokai

Residents of Okirika Street and other adjoining streets behind Roop Hotel in Phase 4, Kubwa, have appealed to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to act quickly on an overflowing sewage from a damaged toilet at a building on Okirika Street.

There is another building under construction in the same compound from where the sewage flows, opposite Our Lord’s Sanctuary branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Our reporter who visited the area said the overflowing sewage had taken over almost the entire street and the adjoining Wase Street, emitting bad odour which residents said had been on for over two months.

A resident who identified himself as Mr Jones told City News that they had been complaining about the environmental risks posed by the sewage but no action was taken by the house owner.

He said the residents were making effort to report to the AEPB just before our reporter visited.

Another resident who preferred not to be named said the tenants were asked to contribute money to repair the damaged toilet but some tenants were of the view that it should be the house owner’s responsibility.

An official of the firm handling works on the compound, who spoke on behalf of the house owner, told our reporter on phone that repair work had already started on the damaged toilet, but residents expressed doubt on this, saying the same promise
