We ’II soon come up with bye - law on child abuse – Abaji LEA scribe
The Secretary of the Local Education Authority (LEA) of Abaji Area Council, Dr. Hassan Suleiman, has disclosed that the legal unit of LEA is currently drafting a bye-law that will be submitted to the authorities of the council to address the issue of child abuse by some parents in the area.
Speaking during an interview over the weekend, Suleiman said that the decision became necessary due to reported incidents of some parents sending their children to go on hawking during school hours.
He also said the law would checkmate cases of early marriage for the girlchild which deny them the opportunity to go to school.
He said that as far as basic education was concerned, it was important for the LEA to tackle such challenges headlong.
He added that as a custodian of basic education at the grassroots level, the LEA has also ensured that all government policies as it affected basic education is interpreted and implemented according to global best practices.
He said the LEA has put in place voluntary committees at various communities that would sensitise parents and opinion leaders on the adverse effects of early marriage.
“As the national president of the association of education secretaries of Nigeria, we have ensured that we lead by example,” he said.
