‘Environmental pollution contributes to infertility in men’

- From Nurudeen Oyewole, Lagos

Industrial and environmental pollution have been identified as some of the contributory factors to the growing cases of infertility and low sperm count among men in recent years, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, a fertility expert has said.

Ajayi, who is also the managing director, Nordica Fertility Centre Lagos, made this known during an interactive session with newsmen.

He said that while industrialisation is considered a developmental progress of the human race, it has consequences especially with its contribution to environmental pollutions.

“In some European countries such as Denmark, recent studies have shown that more than 40 percent of their men are experiencing low sperm count. And that remains a growing and worrisome trend in other parts of the world,” Ajayi said.

The doctor, who said his fertility centre sensitizes the populace about In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), said government’s intervention has become expedient to drive home enlightenment beyond what it is now.

He said, “Though I can say enlightenment has grown these days beyond what it was 10 years ago, yet I think we still need to go deeper than the scratch-in-the-surface experience we currently have. Enlightenment of the populace must involve government.”
