Ogun workers issue fresh 72 hours ultimatum

- From Kehinde Akinyemi, Abeokuta

The organized labour in Ogun state yesterday issued a fresh 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun state government after the expiration of a 23-day ultimatum to embark on full strike.

The workers under the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) said at a news conference at the Iwe Irohin House of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), that the workers were set for the full strike by Thursday.

The NLC chairman, Akeem Ambali said with the expiration of the 23-day ultimatum given on September 29, “and with no concrete response from the government, we are again giving a fresh 72 hours ultimatum for the government to address our issues or be faced with total strike option by Thursday.”

At the well-attended briefing, with all state extended executives of three bodies in attendance, the workers maintained that the situation with them was getting alarming. The state governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun had last week declared that the workers might still have to show understanding as the government could still not meet their agitations. Amosun who at the inauguration of the new chairman of the Ogun state council of Obas, admitted that the government could boast of some funds from the federal government, said the government would use the fund for capital projects and not for workers. He urged traditional rulers to appeal to workers for understanding. But the workers have insisted that unless the state government honoured their various agreements reached in the numerous meetings with them, they would embark on a total strike on Thursday, October 20th.
