Enosoregbe, Imeh, others reach Gov’s Cup Tennis second round

Nigeria’s Clifford Enosoregbe showed his intention of making a great impact in the second leg (Futures 6) of the ongoing Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championsh­ip as he upsets number 7 seed, Benin Republic’s Alex Klegou to book a second round ticket.

Enosoregbe defeated Klegou in two straight sets of 6-4, 6-3 in the first round match decided yesterday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Enosoregbe was not the only Nigerian to reach the second round of the tennis event, as four other Nigerians also booked their passage to the second round of the championsh­ip.

The others are Joseph Imeh Ubon, who defeated Christophe­r Andrew Ito in another straight set of 6-4, 6-4 while Mohammed Mohammed defeated Ghanaian Tsatsu Segbedzie 7-6, 6-4 in the first round match.

Sylvester Emmanuel also crushed Uganda’s Duncan Mugabe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to advance, while Thomas Otu defeated compatriot Albert Bisong Bikom 6-1, 6-4.

However, Moses Michael was not so lucky, as he crashed to Maciej Smola of Poland in 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in their game.

Christophe­r Bulus also lost to Sasi Kumar Mukund of India 6-0, 6-2 while Ikechukwu Iloputa lost his game against Moez Echargui of Tunisia 6-2, 6-2.

In the women’s singles, top seed Valetini Grammatiko­poulou from Greece beat Swede Brenda Njuki 6-4, 7-6, while Harmony Tan of France defeated Ange Oby Kajuru from Japan 6-1, 6-1.

Bulgarian Julia Terziyska defeated French Estelle Casino 6-2, 7-5 and Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine beat Nigerian Angel Macleod 6-0, 6-0.
