A factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, yesterday, issued flag to Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) to stand as the party’s standard bearer for the Ondo State governorship election.

The development came few days after the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, declared Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim as the authentic PDP candidate for the Ondo governorship election.

Ibrahim emerged as the PDP candidate after a parallel congress organised by the other faction headed by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

Jegede collected the flag at a rally organised to mark the start of his campaign.

Speaking at the occasion, the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, warned the INEC against connivance to sabotage will of the people.

The flag was presented to Eyitayo by the national publicity secretary of the Makarfi-led faction, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, who represented Makarfi at the event. Makarfi said that Jegede was recognised by the INEC as the PDP candidate.

Fayose, representing PDP governors, appealed to people of Ondo State to support the PDP candidate.

“We are in a country where opposition is now contesting against INEC,” he alleged.

“We are not contesting against APC. We are now contesting against INEC.”

He advised the national electoral umpire to be neutral before, during and after election.

Earlier, the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, had urged the people to shun a group which he said was laying claim to the governorship candidacy.
