- By Abdulwasiu Hassan

MasterStroke project, an initiative of Acha Memorial Foundation in Nigeria, is partnering with the World Stroke Organization to take action, drive awareness, and push for better access to stroke treatments in Nigeria.

Stroke is a leading cause of death globally. Every two seconds, someone has a stroke, and unfortunately, many do not receive proper stroke care, said in a statement.

Timothy Oguike, founder Acha Memorial Foundation organizers of the MasterStroke project said that: “Recognizing the signs of stroke early, treating it as a medical emergency with admission to a specialized stroke unit, and access to the best professional care can substantially improve outcomes”.

As part of the World stroke it day in October, MasterStroke had organized events in Nigeria, which included roadshows, a “Walk & Run against Stroke in Nigeria (Partnership with Stroke Action Nigeria) and free blood pressure and sugar test in communities within Abuja, Enugu, Lagos & Kaduna.

“To learn more about what other countries are doing about stroke prevention and treatment, the organization also sent delegates to participate in the World Stroke Congress in India. This is part of a larger strategy to reduce stroke cases in Nigeria,” the statement added.

“The right stroke care can prevent stroke and save lives.” said WSO President, Professor Stephen Davis, adding “We are calling on governments to take action to improve awareness that stroke can happen to anyone and increase equity of access to critical stroke treatments”.
