Sadi, ex-minister say Eagles still weak in vital areas

- By Mansur Abubakar

Aformer Super Eagles midfielder Dahiru Sadi and ex-minister of sports and youth development Col. Musa Mohammed (rtd) say despite the highly celebrated Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Algeria last weekend, the senior national team is still weak in some vital areas.

In a chat with Daily Trust, Sadi said the right back position remains a major challenge for Technical adviser Gernot Rohr considering that three players have been used in that position in same number of games while goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi who deputized for injured Carl Ikeme was jittery whenever he was called into action.

“I was in Uyo for the game and basically the lapses I noticed is that the right back position is still yet to be sorted out which makes it a major weak link in the side, Akpeyi looked jittery whenever he was called upon and also the absence of one of Leon Balogun and William Troost Ekong might be disastrous as we don’t have good backups.” The former Bundesliga star noted.

While for Mohammed, who also mentioned Akpeyi as being not good enough for Rohr’s side also lambasted defender Kenneth Omeruo who he felt was too slow on the day.

“Well, for me, the keeper Akpeyi is not good at all and Omeruo is a bit slow these are areas the team need to work on.”

The ex-minister concluded by calling on the Nigeria Football Federation to organise high level friendlies to improve the team.

Nigeria will next take on Cameroun in a double fixture as far as the 2018 Mundial is concerned before hosting the Chipolopolo of Zambia at home with an away trip to Algeria the last game of the group B ties.
