FUT clinic torched as students protest colleague’s death

- From Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, Minna

Part of the clinic at the Bosso campus of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna was torched while some facilities were damaged by students yesterday.

The students who were protesting the death of a colleague also torched vehicles at the campus’s car park and vandalized the institution’s pure water factory, our correspondent learnt.

The crisis has led to the shutdown of the institution for two weeks to prevent the violent protest from spreading to the main campus in Gidan Kwanu as tension continued to rise, and to enable the institution get to the root of the protest and assess the level of damage to facilities.

Sources said the protest started when the students discovered that one of them who rushed to the university clinic after slumping at a football pitch died before he was attended to.

The students blamed the death of their colleague on negligence by the medical officers on duty who they alleged insisted on proper identification of the affected student before he could be attended to, although another account had it that the affected student had died before he reached the hospital.

A statement issued yesterday by the academic registrar, Shekardeen Yufus, advised students to vacate the school premises in Bosso and Gidan Kwanu till March 2, 2017.
