Some ‘catch phrases’ associated with Nigerian artistes

There are different ways that ‘catch phrases’ get mainstream acceptance. One of such ways is when it is coined or used by artistes.

Here are some of such phrases used and or popularize­d by Nigerian artistes.

This phrase became a slang after it was used in a hit song titled “Gobe” by Davido. The word “Gobe” which means trouble has also been used as the theme for this year’s edition of Big Brother Naija which is “see gobe”.

Often used to mean

“See Gobe”: “Yels”:

Yes, this phrase was derived from popular hilarious TV series ‘Jenifa’s diary’ and it was used by Nollywood actress Funke Akindele.

This word came to be on the lip of every Nigerian especially ladies who started using it as a form of descriptio­n for themselves e.g. “Doro fine”, “Doro fresh”, “Doro pretty”. It was derived from the 2014 hit song “Dorobucci” by the Mavins crew. For example, a lady could be heard calling herself “Doro babe”, “Doro girl”. In other words, it became like a prefix to any word.

“Doro”: “What I do”:

Also gotten from Jenifa’s diary, it is a way of asking someone “What did I do?” and it was also used by the hilarious actress Funke.

“Baddo”:

This word has its origin in Olamide’s song which coincident­ally has the same title. When using this slang, it means you are extoling someone’s talent in a particular activity.

Though this may not be popular yet, findings by YOUTHVILLE show that it has been on the lips of few youths and grown-ups who are conversant with the hilarious TV series “Do good”.
