FCT schools tutored on preventing disaster
Students across schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been urged to maintain a high level of hygiene in their environment to prevent the outbreak of diseases leading to disaster in their schools.
This call was made during an awareness campaign organised by the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT.
The Director-General of the FEMA, Alhaji. Abbas Idriss who was represented by the Assistant Director, Planning, Response and Mitigation, Lady Florence Wenegieme said disaster management was everybody’s business including children.
“The purpose of this is that we need to reach out to the young ones to make them understand what disaster is all about and how they can participate in disaster management,” she said.
Speaking on health and safety, Ododa bubakar, Asst. Director, Head of Outreach, FEMA taught the students how to manage their school environment as well as the need to maintain cleanliness in order to prevent outbreak of diseases.
On environmental safety and security, Mr Akpohwaya Iroro Peter said though there are natural and manmade disaster, one way to prevent environmental hazard was through enlightenment campaigns like this.
The principal, Mallam Haruna Nabayi said the enlightenment programme has given the students knowledge on preventing any disaster. “It’s a great awareness campaign for students in the FCT schools,” he said.
One of the students, Miss Nonyelum Favour of Government Secondary School, Wuse explained what she learnt “I learnt that in the event of any disaster, I should inform the FCT Emergency Management by calling the emergency number 112. Also, I have learnt ways to prevent fire disaster.”
