Estate surveyor, Hadiza turns bead-maker in Kaduna

-

Twenty-nine year old Hadiza Yunusa Adamu, from Soba in Kaduna state spent eight years studying Estate Management at Kaduna Polytechnic, delayed by several strike actions of teaching staff.

In spite of the number of years she spent, Hadiza eventually abandoned the HND certificate for bead-making. Graduating with flying colours and as the best graduating student, Hadiza went further to learn a skill.

“At first, I started catering services because I love baking snacks and making pastries. Consequently, I learnt beads making after my NYSC programme and I started making hand shambalas for children and adults by designing it with alphabetical beads to produce different names.

“I later decided to improve my products, as I started designing the shambalas with crystal beads and embroidery threads. My shambalas named ‘Hayyashambala’ are now designed on wrist-watches with different colours while customers patronize me from different states of Nigeria,” she narrated her experience.

Hadiza started making beads with N2,500. She used that to buy the work items like scissors, threads needed for her first bead work. She hopes to expand to a global name.

On patronage, she said everyone patronises her. “I have shambalas for as cheap as N300, N500 and N700, among others while the shambala wrist watches range from N1,500 to N3,000 and above depending on the design and the type of wrist watch needed,” she said.

Hadiza’s story is unique and worth emulating as she earns N10,000 and more weekly from beads instead of idling and waiting for a paid job.

Hadiza has no regrets making beads as she said: “I have no regret not working with my Estate Management Certificate so far, I am proud to be an entrepreneur with great skills and innovative mind. I have taught all my siblings, relatives, friends and some youth who are interested in beadmaking.”

If you’re hoping for freebies, then it’s over. Hadiza hopes to start training classes in beadmaking and catering in her skills acquisition centre. “I will soon start my training classes for bead-making at affordable price to enable everyone benefit. I have trained a lot of people in catering services. I will also make a platform for social media video tutelage,” she said.
