Brightville wins Ibadan Relay

- From Dele Ogunyemi, Ibadan

The representatives the Brightville College have emerged winners at the Ibadan Best of the Best relay race held at the New Sports Stadium, University of Ibadan, defeating last year’s winners Command Secondary School.

Brightville College was victorious in the male and female categories of the competition, beating their counterparts from Abadina Grammar School, UI; Best Brain College, Idi-Ape; Command Secondary School, Apata and Deril Academy, Gbagi who are classed as the best in school’s relay race in Oyo State.

In a chat with journalists shortly after the event, the school Proprietor, Dr. Isaac Friday Ogada noted that the idea of Best of the Best Relay Race was conceived eight years ago to evaluate how schools’ athletes are improving.

“I noticed that the way they run invitation relay race of nowadays is not the way it is used to be in those days, in those days, invitation relay race is an avenue to detect athletes and put them into national team. But now, some invitational relay races are being done just for the fun of it. So I decided that some of those schools that have good record in relay race would come together, then we pick best out of them and our school will compete with them. It has been on every year because that is a platform to invite some of the best schools as far as relay race is concern. It is also an avenue for us to strengthen our athletic team with those great schools.

“It was a wonderful event, as you can see every aspect of the event was very competitive, enjoyable and interesting. The houses competed in various events; you could as well see the testimonial match, where a display of football artistry was made. You could also see the students displayed character, zeal, determination and talent too,” Ogada said.
