Bumper harvest: Kano establishe­s warehouse for wheat

Kano State government has revealed that it has introduced measures to save wheat farmers in the state against possible glut of the produce in the grain markets and also to save them from the activities of middlemen.

This was disclosed by Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, during the the official launching of the commenceme­nt of 2017 wheat harvest programme held at Garun Babba village of Garun Malam Local Government. According to the governor, after recording bumper harvest especially in wheat; the state government has approved N50 million as interest free loan to wheat farmers across the state, adding that warehouse system was also introduced across various locations in the state where farmers would register to keep their produce to save them from the menace of middlemen.

“The state government recently approved N50 million short-term loans for wheat farmers who need quick cash, to prevent them from selling off their produce at give-away prices, until its price stabilized in the market,” said Ganduje.

In his address Minister of Agricultur­e, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who praised the government of Kano for leading the way in rice and wheat processing, production and agricultur­al transforma­tion in the country, assured of the support of the federal government towards transformi­ng the sector.

He announced plans to create special grazing reserves for herdsmen across the country, revealing that the Federal Government would also train 3,000 Civil Defense Officers to protect herdsmen from cattle rustlers.
