Two arraigned over extortion in Kwara

- From Romoke W. Ahmad, Ilorin

The Kwara State Police Command has charged two persons to an Ilorin Magistrate Court for allegedly extorting N2.5 million from a man.

Alfa Jimoh Saadu of Ile Kewu community in Alfa Yahaya area of Ilorin and a teacher, Alfa Abdulganiy Saad of Oke Agodi in the Ilorin metropolis, were said to have posed as Islamic clerics to their victim, one Abdulganiy, a resident of Lagos

The prosecutor, Inspector Nasir Yusuf, told the court that one of the person, Jimoh Saadu, had claimed to his victim that he had supernatural powers to deal with evil spirits, and allegedly gave black soap and black powdery substance to his victim to mix with pap for drinking.

The prosecutor also told the court that the suspect later introduced the victim to other suspect named Abdulganiy Saad, who happened to be Jimoh’s younger brother, while he allegedly acted as an aged man on phone while talking with their victim.

The victim said that he did not realise he was being charmed until he gave out about N2.5 million to Jimoh and his younger brother.

Abdulganiy narrated the development to his elder siblings when he came back to his senses, while he was advised to report the activities of fake clerics to the police.

The police inspector said the two suspects had confessed to be fake spiritualists.

The magistrate, A. M. Ibrahim, who had earlier ordered that the suspects be remanded in Oke Kura prison, refused to grant them bail because they abused the privilege by jumping bail.

The case was adjourned to March 28, 2017 for further hearing.
