UniJos students, management disagree over N45,000 charge
The management of University of Jos has decided to go ahead with the implementation of federal government’s approved harmonized school charge of N45, 000 for all undergraduate students, advising all ‘law abiding students’ to pay the new school charge at the commencement of the 2016/2017 academic session.
While the university had last week issued a statement that the stakeholders it invited for a meeting, including parents and guardians, had accepted the new harmonized school charges, the Student Union Government (SUG) President, Sydney Daman on Friday kicked against the increment, urging students to delay payment of the new fees while the union continued to engage the management for a downward review.
Countering that, the university management in another statement issued by the Registrar/Secretary to Council/Senate, Monday Danjem stated that the increment was based on a letter it received from the NUC on the 22nd of December 2015 conveying the newly approved schedule of harmonized school charges to all federal universities for immediate implementation.
The statement said management had met on several occasions with the SUG to seek their understanding, adding, “it was this spirit of openness and transparency that management also convened a stakeholders meeting with parents and guardians of the students during which it was collectively resolved that the university should commence the implementation of the new school charges structure of N45, 000.”
It said based on the increase in the cost of most goods and services in the country, it was no longer realistic to continue with the old school charges and still expect to successfully run the university.
