Boko Haram still unrepentant – Security agencies

- From Uthman Abubakar, Maiduguri

In spite of the massive depletion of their population by men of the Operation Lafiya Dole, the fleeing remnants of Boko Haram insurgents are still unrepentant in their bid to continue unleashing terror, security agencies have warned.

The Borno State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Ibrahim Abdullahi, issued the warning in Maiduguri yesterday while parading a 17-year old insurgent, Ali Mustapha, arrested by men of the Corps, allegedly spying in Maiduguri towards facilitating an attack.

“The boy is a Boko Haram spy sent on a mission to identify areas where they are going to carry out suicide bombings. He has confessed to killing 13 people, and he knows how to handle all sorts of rifles,” the NSCDC Commandant announced, explaining, “they (the alleged spies) are three in number, but we have only been able to arrest only him. We are tracking the remaining two.”

Abdullahi warned: “The fleeing Boko Haram terrorists are in our midst. This is the truth about it; so they should sum up courage to let us know, because they have not repented, judging from the interview we conducted with those arrested. They are fleeing after their defeat by the military, but they have dispersed into our midst; they are still not remorseful. They still believe in that ideology.”

The 17-year old Ali Mustapha, who hailed from Marte Local Government Area, denied being sent to Maiduguri to spy to facilitate the bombing of some locations, arguing, “We were sent only to come and assess the situation of the town in relation to how it was in the past.”
