Nigeria has 11.5m vehicles at Q1 2017 –NBS

Nigeria has an estimated vehicle population of 11,458,370 as at the first quarter of 2017, out of which commercial ones accounted for 53.8 per cent.

A Road Transport Data released yesterday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that private vehicles accounted for 44.5 per cent of the total vehicle population in the country, government vehicles 1.65 per cent and diplomatic vehicles 0.1 per cent.

With the total population of the country put at 193,392,517 in 2016, Nigeria’s vehicle per population ratio is put 0.06.

The report also showed that a total of 220,736 national drivers licenses were produced in Q1 2017, with Lagos and the FCT producing the highest number while Yobe and Kebbi states had the least number.

Similarly, a total of 113,358 vehicle number plates were produced in Q1 2017, with Ebonyi and Anambra states producing the highest number while Lagos and Sokoto states produced the least.

The Q1 2017 road transport data also reported that 2,556 road crashes occurred in Q1 2017, with speed violation as the major cause accounting for 42.69 per cent of the total road crashes reported.

Loss of control and dangerous driving followed closely as they accounted for 12.73 per cent and 7.34 per cent of the total road crashes recorded during the period.
