2 die in another Lagos building collapse

Two persons were said to have died while 14 others rescued under from the rubble of a three storey building that collapsed yesterday on Daddy Ajala Street, Lagos Island.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Lagos Island Hospital mortuary while the 14 persons rescued were treated at the emergency unit of the hospital and subsequent­ly allowed to go home.

The victims were said to be working at the site of the three storey building that was undergoing reconstruc­tion.

Sources said more persons were still trapped under the collapsed structure as at press time yesterday.

It was gathered the house collapsed around 6.45am when workers were just resuming.

Tiawo Omilani, 38, a carpenter at the constructi­on site, said the building collapsed minutes after he left to buy coverage.

He said: “Tijani, my fellow carpenter, had just entered one of the rooms on the ground floor to change into his working cloths when the house fell. He is among those that were rescued.”

Another witness, Fatai Amao, a bricklayer, said his late arrival to work was what saved him.

“Some of those trapped came to see if the contractor will offer them anything to do” he added.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, who confirmed the incident, said it was the prompt response by emergency responders that culminated in the rescue of 14 victims from the collapsed building.

Tiamiyu noted that preliminar­y investigat­ion conducted at the scene of the incident revealed that illegal activities of repairs were on going.

33 Artillery Brigade Bauchi gets new commander

Brigadier General Timothy Olowomeye has been appointed as the new Commander, 33 Brigade, Shadawanka Military Cantonment in Bauchi.

A statement yesterday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 33 Artillery Brigade, Major Joseph Adekunle Afolasade, said Brigadier General Olowomeye took over from Brigadier General Abraham Dusu who has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army School of Artillery Kachia, Kaduna State.

The statement described Brigadier General Olowomeye as a seasoned senior military officer who held various command and staff appointmen­ts.

“He was Deputy Director, Army Transforma­tion and Innovation Centre, Abuja. He is a fellow of the National Defence College, Abuja.

“Until his appointmen­t, he was the Deputy Commandant Nigerian Army School of Artillery, Kachia, Kaduna State.

“He assumed command of the Bridge following a routine handing and taking over ceremony at Bridge Headquarte­rs in Shadawanka Military Cantonment, Bauchi earlier today 29 May, 2017,” the statement added.
