Garki market traders task VP on promise

- By Taiwo Adeniyi

Traders in Garki Model Market, Abuja, have urged the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to keep to his promise which he made during his recent visit to ensure that the cost of doing business especially for micro, small and medium enterprises in Nigeria is reduced.

The acting president made a surprise stop at the market last Friday to have a one on one interaction with traders.

Also, Abuja Markets Management Limited (AMML), managers of Garki Model Market has congratulated the administration on its two years in office noting that the visit was a testimony that the administration wants to take government to the people.

A statement issued by AMML’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Innocent Amaechina, quoted the Managing Director, Abubakar Usman Faruk, as saying that the visit has rekindled the hope of the ordinary traders, not just in Garki Model Market but across the FCT and Nigeria that government cared about them.

On the high cost of rent in the market complained by the traders in the market, the management said the rents were mostly a product of market forces since the shops and stalls were sold out to the public even before it took over management.

“The only area that government has control in the market is the informal sector developed by us and since 2009 the rent in those section has not changed from N3, 450 per month and service charge at 2,500 per month. This is despite the galloping rise in the cost of providing services within this period,” the statement read.
