- By Shehu Abubakar

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Border Command of Lagos State, have intercepted 5,863 kilogrammes of compressed dried weeds that tested positive for cannabis valued at N60 million.

In a statement, the Head of Public Affairs of the agency, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the illicit drug consignments were smuggled in from Ghana to Nigeria by waterways before they were transferred into two vehicles that had since been impounded by the agency.

The statement quoted the NDLEA Commander at the Seme Border, Mr Udotong Essien, as saying that those arrested in connection with the seizure of the illicit drugs included a Ghanaian, Adoboe Nana Shelter, a male Nigerian, Bola Adigun, as well as two female Nigerians, Falilat Sadiq and Mary Ige Joseph.

The Ghanaian who claimed to be a fisherman said that he illegally imported cannabis into the country because of the anticipated financial gain involved.

Commenting on the arrest and seizure, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (rtd.) described the seizure as a sweet victory against the activities of drug trafficking syndicates working at the Seme Border, saying: “I am very pleased with the latest seizure by the Seme Border Command. The criminal activities of the group were being closely monitored by undercover officers until it was expedient to intercept the drugs.”
