6 killed in suicide bomb attacks on IDP camps, UniMaid

3 policemen dismissed for illegal arrest, extortion

Six people were killed and 17 others injured during three separate suicide bomb attacks on Dalori I and Dalori II camps of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and on the University of Maiduguri, Borno State.

Daily Trust gathered that a male suicide bomber killed himself and three IDPs and injured 17 other IDPs when he detonated his IED at Dallori I IDPs camp while a female bomber who operated at Dallori II succeeded in killing only herself.

At the nearby University of Maiduguri (UniMaid) a male suicide bomber, while attempting to get into the premises of the university at 4 am, unintentio­nally detonated the explosive strapped to his body, killing himself.

Police Spokesman in the The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed three policemen attached to Area ‘N’ Command, Ijede-Ikorodu, Lagos State, over allegation of illegal arrest and extortion.

The affected policemen were identified as AP.No 136005 Insp. Okelue Nkemeonye, F/No. 355897 Sgt. Braimoh Sunday and F/No. 359928 Sgt. Yusuf Olukoga.

The Head, Public Complaints of the Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU), ACP Abayomi Shogunle, made this disclosure in a statement, explaining that the state, DSP Victor Isuku, said in a statement he issued in Maiduguri yesterday that on Sunday at 09:15pm, the suspected female Boko Haram terrorist took advantage of the darkness of night and attempted to gain access into Dalori II camp through the rear perimeter fence.

“Fortunatel­y, she was sighted by vigilant security personnel on duty and chased. In an attempt to escape arrest, she hurriedly policemen were dismissal after an Orderly Room trial was conducted at the Zone Two Command Headquarte­rs, Onikan-Yaba, Lagos.

He said that upon the receipt of the complaint on June 21, the unit dispatched its team to Ikorodu where the three policemen, including AP No. 98199 ASP Bayo Obadia, who led the team were apprehende­d.

Shogunle said preliminar­y investigat­ion revealed that all the allegation­s contained in the WhatsApp message actually happened, that the four armed police officers falsely paraded themselves as operatives of the detonated the IED strapped to her body, killing herself alone. The impact of the explosion destroyed a portion of the IDP camp fence,” DSP Isuku said.

A similar statement issued yesterday by the Informatio­n Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Maiduguri, Malam Abdulkadir Ibrahim, said three persons were killed and 17 others injured during the two separate suicide bomb incidents at the two camps. He said that investigat­ion also showed that the officers extorted N200, 000 from the young men whom they tagged Yahoo Yahoo Boys, and that the money was forced from them via ATM withdrawal (N90,000) and mobile bank money transfer (N110,000), to a third party account provided by the policemen.

Shogunle said the InspectorG­eneral of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who commended the unit, said all allegation­s of profession­al misconduct reported against any police officer would be treated in line with the relevant laws.
