Fire service to seal buildings that contravene fire code

- By Taiwo Adeniyi

The Acting Controller of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service, Julius Opetunsin, has urged property owners to ensure that their premises comply with the National Fire Safety Code or risk having them sealed.

Opetunsin who made this known during a courtesy call on the FCT Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, said the service would soon commence full-scale enforcement of the code.

While appealing to FCT police on ensuring the success of the enforcement exercise by providing personnel, he said the fire service would not condone any premises that did not have necessary fire safety equipment.

“The National Fire Safety Code empowers us to seal up erring buildings or premises that do not comply with the national fire safety standard, so with the help of the police when we go together for enforcement everybody will be safe,” he said.

He said the fire service had been sensitising residents on the necessary equipment to be installed in buildings to ensure the safety of residents.

He said, “We have been inspecting buildings, conducting risk assessment and giving recommendations. The CP has told me what to do once we do it, the enforcement would start.”

The CP, Musa Kimo pledged the support of the police in ensuring the success of the fire wardens in safe guarding residents.
