Aisha Buhari commission­s breastfeed­ing rooms in Kebbi

Wife of the President Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari yesterday commission­ed breast feeding rooms set up by Kebbi State Government for working mothers in the state ministries, department­s and agencies.

While delivering her speech during the commission­ing ceremony at the state secretaria­t, Gwadangwaj­i area of Birnin Kebbi, Aisha who was represente­d by her Special Assistant, Hajiya Ajo Sani, said the initiative which was the first of its kind in the country was significan­t at the period when the country was celebratin­g the world breast feeding day.

She said, “Today’s event is taking place at the state level in collaborat­ion with my Future Assured Programme with the aim to encourage a separate area where mothers can convenient­ly breastfeed their babies in the work place.”

Hajiya Buhari added that the initiative would promote the health and wellbeing of mothers and children towards achieving the Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Goals (SDGs).

She called on wives of governors in other states to emulate the breastfeed­ing initiative of the wife of Kebbi State Governor, Dr Zainab Abubakar Atiku towards promoting breast feeding among mothers in the state.

Earlier in her speech, Dr Zainab Bagudu said global statistics indicated that 100,000 children died annually as a result of inadequate breast feeding by mothers, leading to $21bn economic loss annually.
