114 people die in road accidents in Kebbi
The Kebbi State Police Command at the weekend said 114 people have died from road accidents that occurred on some roads in parts of the local government areas of the state.
Speaking during a security meeting called by the state government, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Kabiru said, “Going by our records from January 2017 to date, Kebbi State has lost 114 people to road accidents.”
He said many of the accidents were due to over speeding, reckless driving, ignorance and refusal to obey traffic rules and overloading. He said the police authorities had been having regular interactions with members of the NURTW, motorcycle and tricycle operators in the state to sensitize the drivers on safety rules within the township and inter-state roads.
The CP said the police needed more funds to be able to curb crime and maintain security in the state, lamenting that his command apart from needing more operational vehicles, even finds it difficult sometimes to fuel and maintain the few ones it has.
He called on the authorities to heed the call by the police authorities on the need for a trust fund for the force to enable it perform its functions effectively.
To maintain and sustain security in Kebbi State he called on the traditional rulers, religious bodies, local government authorities, village heads and community leaders to join the security agents to tackle crimes in the state.
“Security is not the duty of the police alone. You also have roles to play. We need useful information from you to track down those disturbing the peace of the state,” he said.
