CITY NEWS Flood destroys farms, roads in Abaji
Many farms have been submerged by flood waters following a torrential rainfall in two villages in Abaji Area Council yesterday.
The flood also destroyed part of the road between Kuka and Yaba towns.
The situation has led to apprehension among the residents who feared the road might cave in after another downpour.
Flood washed a significant portion of the road between Kuka and Yaba communities while some maize and rice farms were submerged by water.
A farmer, Kabiru Yahaya, said the flood after a heavy downpour which lasted several hours from Sunday morning till yesterday destroyed most of the crops planted at the river bank on the road.
“Most of the crops I planted like okra, maize and rice were submerged by the flood, but my major worry is this road that is almost washed away,” he said.
He said the flood threatened the source of livelihood of many peasant farmers in the community and neighbouring villages.
He appealed to the FCT Administration to urgently intervene.
A former chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Musa Yahaya Mohammed, who was at the scene, said the flood was as a result of heavy rain and the overflowing Bobo River that connects to Gurara River.
He said the road, if urgent step was not taken, might subject residents to hardships.
The Etsu Yaba, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, also expressed concern over the havoc caused by the flood, saying the Yaba-Abaji road also linked to Gulu and Lapai local government areas of Niger State.
He appealed for the intervention of the FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, in saving the residents.
