- From Abdullateef Aliyu, Lagos

Non-governmental organization, the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation has assisted 28 people with medical challenges with N18m to undergo surgeries.

The breakdown of the beneficiaries shows that six would undergo surgery for eye problem; three for breast cancer and fibroid; and two for kidney transplant.

Others include two patients battling a hole in the heart, two for leg surgeries, spinal cord surgery support, hearing aid, among others.

Executive Director of the foundation, Mr. Sulyman Olagunju, said the gesture was in fulfilment of the core objective of the foundation to provide succour to the less privileged.

He said, should realize “Muslims that Zakat is not optional, Zakat is an important pillar among the five pillars, and people must pay their Zakat. Zakat should not be toyed with; it is a serious offence not to pay Zakat.

“The reason is because without paying Zakat, your religion as a Muslim is not complete. Zakat bridges the gap between the rich and the poor and when an environment doesn’t have that lubricant that will bring the two (the rich and the poor) together, such environment will have problem and that is why Zakat is the most important pillar”, Olagunju stressed.

The beneficiaries appreciated the foundation for its intervention which they believe would help in restoring their health while praying to Allah to enrich their pockets.
