Safe Spaces empowers 10 teenage girls in Kaduna

- From Maryam Ahmadu-Suka, Kaduna

Ten girls have graduated from a solution-driven initiative organised by Safe Spaces pilot programme.

The girls went through an intensive three months skills acquisition training in sewing, adult literacy classes and mentoring for teenage girls who are out-of-school with a view to ending poverty and reducing inequality.

The girls have been given a sewing machine each as start-up tools for their business and will continue to be mentored in order for them to use the skills they have learnt to make a living for themselves instead of hawking or remaining idle.

“The safespaces project does not just start and end with teaching the girls skills and giving them tools/equipments, but more importantly is to mentor girls and young women into giving back to the society, contributing to making the society better starting from their homes, community then the larger society.” Coordinator, Ja Muje Safespaces Aisha Yakubu said.

The Founder of the initiative, Farida Yahya who is the Editor-In-Chief of NorthernligeNG while speaking to newsmen after the flag-off said, Ja Muje seeks to provide tools and support aimed at ameliorating the dearth of value in the regions economy in order to get the people of the region motivated to contribute meaningfully towards shaping a better world for themselves.

“We are looking at empowering at least 5000 out-of-school and in-school-girls across the 10 states in the next two to three years. For Rigasa we started with out-of -school because we looked at the community and we realised that the out-of-school are more than the in- school.” She said.

A beneficiary, Shamsiyya Ismail thanked the members of the project and assured that they will do their best to make judicious use of the startups equipment they have received with a view to changing their lives from poverty to wealth.
